Beautiful soccer weather.

FINAL: USA 1, Costa Rica 0.

NCAA Tournament be darned, I couldn’t turn away from this. It was not pretty, but it was fascinating!

The game is between two French teams I know nothing about, with Norwegian commentary, but I’m still fascinated watching it. Especially the guy with the snow blower who walks around the field and tries to keep the sidelines visible.

If today’s loss is any indications of future form, the USMNT may have some trouble qualifying for the 2014 World Cup.

The United States men’s national team was defeated by Honduras today in the CONCACAF qualifying final-round opener for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil 2-1, and it was a pretty lackluster performance from the Stars and Stripes against an opponent that on paper they were better than.

The loss to Honduras isn’t necessarily catastrophic for the US hopes of advancing to the World Cup, but it does cut into the margin for error pretty significantly. It makes the next game against Costa Rica a must-win ahead of a match-up at Mexico, and more importantly, the loss also put some of the US team’s weaknesses on full display.

Villa were unable to claw back the 3-1 deficit from the first leg of the Capital One Cup encounter even though leading scorer Christian Benteke put them in front before halftime.

This is one of the things I enjoy about soccer, the Cup competitions where your team could wind up playing anyone, anywhere. The other is relegation, which I find completely fascinating as well. Don’t think it would work in the US, mostly because of stadium costs, minor league affiliations and ownership groups, etc., but it would be fun to watch a last place MLB team battle it out with a AAA team for a place in the MLB the next season, no?
